NEWS REGARDING THE TRAIN FERRY CONNECTION BETWEEN SWEDEN AND FINLAND
Railway transport via the train ferry between Stockholm and Turku has become increasingly popular. As a result of its environmentally friendly nature rail transport have increased it’s share of the transports of heavy industrial goods. Rail transportation is already now meeting the tightening environmental demands of EU. Tallink Silja Oy, the operator of the train ferry between Stockholm and Turku, has announced their intention to end their ownership in SeaRail EEIG. This will happen in May. The other two owners, VR Osakeyhtiö and Green Cargo AB are continuing as owners. SeaRail EEIG and Tallink Silja Oy have made a freight agreement for the transport of rail wagons between Stockholm and Turku. The sea voyage will continue unchanged on the train ferry ms Seawind. In addition to the sea route SeaRail EEIG is also using the northern land route via Haparanda. SeaRail EEIG is a daughter company to VR Osakeyhtiö and Green Cargo AB. SeaRail EEIG takes care of marketing and selling rail transports between Finland and Scandinavia as well as between Finland and Europe. Customers include steel and forest industries, but also east bound transports of packaging materials and household appliances are becoming more important. Furthermore SeaRail EEIG:s volumes of goods between Scandinavia and Russia are increasing.
